Kigali to Host Fourth Edition of Urutozi Dance Challenge, Bringing Together Over 1,000 Youth Performers

Kigali is set to host the fourth edition of the Urutozi Dance Challenge, Rwanda’s premier youth-centered cultural event, drawing together more than 1,000 young performers from across the nation. Scheduled for December 28, 2025, at Lycée de Kigali (LDK), the annual competition has become a hallmark of creativity, talent, and youth empowerment, celebrating the country’s dynamic young artists.

This year, the event introduces significant innovations. For the first time, a 3x3 basketball segment will run alongside the dance competition, acknowledging the growing connection between urban dance culture and street-style basketball. Organizers aim to offer participants more avenues to display their skills while promoting athleticism as part of a broader youth engagement strategy.

Joseph Nzaramba, CEO of Urutozi Gakondo the organization behind the event explained that integrating basketball aligns with the event’s mission to expand opportunities for young people. “We have added a new component: identifying talent in 3x3 basketball. Basketball and dance naturally go together. Six dance groups will receive awards, along with three top basketball teams,” Nzaramba said. He added that the initiative could form the foundation of a youth basketball league, beginning with talents identified in secondary schools.

Prize money has also doubled compared to previous years. The 2025 edition will award up to 6 million Rwandan francs (Rwf) among top performers, a substantial increase from the previous total of 3 million Rwf. Organizers believe the higher stakes will encourage participation and elevate the level of performances across all categories.

Participants aged ten and above are eligible to register. All entrants must submit a video no longer than 90 seconds demonstrating their dance skills. The competition is open to all dance styles, ensuring creative freedom for choreographers and performers alike. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., promising a full day of dynamic performances and engaging youth-driven entertainment.

The 2024 edition of the Urutozi Dance Challenge concluded with standout performances. KTY Crew (Kimisagara Youth) secured first place and 1.3 million Rwf, African Mirror took second with 800,000 Rwf, and Indaro Crew earned 500,000 Rwf for third place. Semi-finalists such as Dynamic Dance Crew, Hope Dance Family, and Incredible Kids Academy received 100,000 Rwf each, recognizing their dedication and skill despite not reaching the podium.

Organizers are already planning for 2026, with ambitions to expand the competition internationally. Invitations for participants from other countries will mark the first regional phase of the Urutozi Dance Challenge, enhancing its prestige and fostering cross-cultural exchanges. This strategy reflects the growing influence of the event as a platform for young creatives in Rwanda and the region.

Over the years, the Urutozi Dance Challenge has solidified its role within Rwanda’s entertainment and cultural landscape. Beyond showcasing exceptional talent, the event nurtures the creative industry by inspiring young people to pursue careers in performing arts and sports. Its continued growth and evolution underscore a commitment to youth development, community engagement, and artistic excellence.

The 2025 edition of the Urutozi Dance Challenge exemplifies Rwanda’s emphasis on integrating culture, creativity, and athleticism to empower the next generation. With larger prizes, expanded categories, and over 1,000 participants expected, the event promises a vibrant display of skill, energy, and innovation. Young dancers and athletes alike will have a unique opportunity to gain recognition, develop their talents, and contribute to the country’s thriving cultural and sports sectors.

As Kigali prepares to welcome youth from across Rwanda, the Urutozi Dance Challenge continues to inspire, connect, and celebrate creativity. Its enduring success demonstrates the potential of cultural events to drive social cohesion, foster talent, and position Rwanda as a hub for youth-driven innovation in arts and sports.
