Morocco is putting the final touches on preparations to host the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. With less than two weeks until kickoff, Morocco has nearly completed major upgrades across all six host cities, ensuring stadiums meet CAF and FIFA standards while also establishing facilities that will support future international tournaments, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
This marks Morocco’s second time hosting Africa’s premier football event, following the 1988 edition. The country was also slated to host AFCON in 2015 but withdrew due to the Ebola outbreak that affected several West African nations. A decade later, Morocco has invested heavily in modernizing its sports infrastructure to align with global standards, showcasing a new era for African football.
Six Host Cities and Stadiums Ready for AFCON 2025
1. Adrar Stadium – Agadir
Located in the scenic Souss-Massa region near the Atlas Mountains, Adrar Stadium is one of Morocco’s most modern venues. Built between 2003 and 2006 with a capacity of 45,480, it underwent a $12 million renovation between 2023 and 2025 to meet CAF and FIFA regulations. The stadium will host several tournament matches and is slated for additional upgrades ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
2. Mohammed V Stadium – Casablanca
As one of Morocco’s most iconic stadiums, Mohammed V Stadium, built in 1955, serves as home to Raja Casablanca and Wydad Casablanca. Officially seating 45,000 spectators, historic matches have seen crowds exceeding 110,000. The stadium has undergone five major renovations, with the latest completed in 2025 to host AFCON matches.
3. Fez Stadium – Fez
Completed in 2007 at a cost of over $65 million, Fez Stadium currently holds 45,000 fans and is designed for multiple sports, including athletics and ceremonies. Expansion plans aim to increase capacity to 55,800 before the 2030 World Cup, reflecting Morocco’s long-term vision for multi-use international venues.
4. Marrakesh Stadium – Marrakesh
Constructed between 2003 and 2012, Marrakesh Stadium combines football and Olympic-level athletics in a rectangular design. Seating 45,240 spectators, it is strategically located near Marrakesh Menara International Airport, enhancing accessibility for international visitors.
5. Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium – Rabat
The newly completed stadium in Morocco’s capital, Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, boasts 69,500 seats, making it the second-largest AFCON venue. Construction began in 2023 and concluded in September 2025 at a cost of $75 million. Built under the guidance of King Mohammed VI, it anchors Rabat’s sports district alongside Olympic swimming and indoor arenas.
6. Moulay El Hassan Stadium – Rabat
Also newly built in Rabat, Moulay El Hassan Stadium opened on November 13, 2025, with a 22,000-seat capacity and a construction cost of $22.65 million. Its design highlights Moroccan cultural heritage while providing a venue for football and other large-scale sports events.
7. Rabat Olympic Stadium – Rabat
Part of a $528 million sports complex, Rabat Olympic Stadium, completed in May 2025, accommodates 21,000 spectators. It is confirmed to host both AFCON 2025 matches and 2030 FIFA World Cup fixtures.
8. Al Medina Stadium – Rabat
The smallest AFCON venue, Al Medina Stadium, seats 18,000 and was completed in 2025 with a $70 million investment. Despite its size, it meets all international standards and will host several group-stage fixtures.
9. Tangier Grand Stadium – Tangier
The largest venue for AFCON 2025–2026, Tangier Grand Stadium, accommodates 75,000 spectators after an $80 million upgrade. Originally built in 2011 and renovated in 2022 for the FIFA Club World Cup, it will host key tournament matches and is a confirmed site for the 2030 World Cup.
