Al-Hilal SC Confirm Signing of Rwanda Star Defender Clément Niyigena from APR FC

Al-Hilal Sports Club have officially confirmed the signing of Rwandan international defender Clément Niyigena, completing a major transfer from APR FC in a move that marks a significant milestone for both the player and Rwandan football.

The confirmation came from Al-Hilal SC head coach Laurențiu Reghecampf during a press briefing held on Thursday, as the Sudanese giants continue preparations for their high-profile CAF Champions League encounter against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. Speaking to journalists, Reghecampf acknowledged that the club had finalized the deal for the highly rated central defender, expressing cautious optimism about his integration into the squad.

“We have completed the signing of a Rwandan central defender,” Reghecampf said. “We believe he can be an important addition, but everything will depend on how well he adapts to the team and our playing style.”

The statement put an end to days of speculation surrounding Niyigena’s future, following reports that Al-Hilal SC had submitted an official request to APR FC earlier in the week. On Thursday morning, APR FC Chairman Brigadier General Deo Rusanganwa confirmed that the Rwandan champions had received and accepted Al-Hilal’s offer on Wednesday, paving the way for the defender’s move abroad.

Niyigena’s transfer represents a major step in his rapidly rising career. Over the past few seasons, the defender has established himself as one of the most reliable and consistent players in the Rwandan Premier League. His composure, positional intelligence, and leadership at the back made him a cornerstone of APR FC’s success and a regular call-up to the national team, Amavubi.

In June 2024, Niyigena extended his contract with APR FC by two years, a move that underlined the club’s confidence in his abilities and their desire to build around him. That extension came after the expiration of his previous deal, which he had signed in 2022 following his transfer from Rayon Sports. Before joining Rayon Sports, Niyigena had developed his early professional experience at Marines FC, where his performances first began to attract attention.

His time at APR FC proved transformative. Week after week, Niyigena delivered assured displays in defense, combining physical strength with tactical discipline. He played a central role in APR FC’s dominant 2024/25 campaign, during which the club completed an impressive domestic treble. APR FC lifted the Rwandan Premier League title, the Peace Cup, and the Heroes Cup, asserting their dominance in local football.

Niyigena’s influence did not go unnoticed. At the end of the season, he was named Rwandan League Player of the Year for 2024/25, an individual honor that reflected his consistency, maturity, and impact across competitions. For many observers, the award confirmed what had already become clear: Niyigena was ready for the next level.

The move to Al-Hilal SC offers that next challenge. One of Africa’s most decorated clubs, Al-Hilal regularly competes at the highest level of continental football and boasts a strong presence in the CAF Champions League. For Niyigena, joining such a club provides an opportunity to test himself against elite opponents, gain international exposure, and further develop his game in a more demanding environment.

From Al-Hilal’s perspective, the signing fits into a broader strategy of strengthening the squad ahead of crucial continental fixtures. With the CAF Champions League entering a decisive phase, Reghecampf and his technical team are keen to add depth and defensive stability. Niyigena’s profile  disciplined, physically strong, and experienced in high-pressure matches  appears well aligned with those objectives.

While Reghecampf emphasized that adaptation will be key, the expectation around the club is that Niyigena can quickly become a valuable option in defense. His experience with APR FC in both domestic and continental competitions, as well as his role with the national team, has prepared him for the intensity and expectations that come with playing for a club of Al-Hilal’s stature.

The transfer is also being widely celebrated in Rwanda as another sign of the country’s growing footprint in African football. In recent years, more Rwandan players have earned moves abroad, reflecting improvements in local development, coaching, and competitive standards. Niyigena’s journey  from Marines FC to Rayon Sports, then APR FC, and now Al-Hilal SC  stands as a clear example of that progress.

For APR FC, the departure of such a key player marks the end of an important chapter. However, the club’s willingness to facilitate the move highlights its role not only as a title-winning side but also as a platform for talent development and international advancement. Club officials have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to supporting players who earn opportunities beyond Rwanda’s borders.

As Al-Hilal SC finalize preparations for their CAF Champions League clash with Mamelodi Sundowns, attention will also turn to when Niyigena will make his debut and how quickly he can adapt to his new surroundings. Expectations are measured, but the belief in his potential is strong.

For Clément Niyigena, the move is both a reward for years of hard work and the beginning of a new, demanding chapter. Carrying the hopes of his club and country, he now steps onto a bigger stage, aiming to prove that Rwandan defenders can compete  and excel  at the highest levels of African football.
