El Merrikh Bentiu Signs Rwandan Duo Serumogo Ali and Tshabalala in Strategic Squad Boost

El Merrikh SC Bentiu of South Sudan has officially announced the signing of two Rwandan footballers, defender Serumogo Ali and versatile player Shabani Hussein “Tshabalala,” in a move aimed at strengthening the club’s squad ahead of the next phase of the South Sudan Premier League. The club confirmed the acquisitions during a formal unveiling ceremony held on Monday, January 19, 2026, after both players successfully completed mandatory medical examinations.

The announcement marks another significant chapter in the growing presence of Rwandan footballers in South Sudan, a league that has increasingly become an attractive destination for players seeking new challenges and competitive exposure beyond Rwanda’s borders. El Merrikh Bentiu, one of the most ambitious clubs in the country, is clearly positioning itself for improved domestic performance by investing in experienced and battle-tested talent.

Shabani Hussein “Tshabalala” was the first of the two players to reach an agreement with the South Sudanese club. His move required negotiations with Musanze FC, where he still had six months remaining on his contract. To secure his release, El Merrikh Bentiu paid a transfer fee reported to be 20 million Rwandan francs, underscoring the club’s determination to bring him on board.

Tshabalala has built a reputation as a disciplined and energetic player capable of contributing both defensively and offensively. During his time at Musanze FC, he was known for his work rate, tactical awareness, and ability to adapt to different roles on the pitch. His transfer is viewed as a calculated investment by El Merrikh Bentiu, which is seeking players who can quickly integrate into the squad and deliver consistent performances.

On the other hand, Serumogo Ali joined El Merrikh Bentiu as a free agent following his recent departure from Rayon Sports. His exit from the Kigali-based club came at the end of last week, shortly after a heavy 4–0 league defeat against Al Hilal. In that match, Serumogo found himself under intense scrutiny, with sections of fans and commentators questioning his performance.

Despite the criticism, Serumogo remains one of the most experienced defenders in Rwandan football. His time at Rayon Sports saw him compete at the highest domestic level, including high-pressure fixtures that demanded composure and leadership at the back. El Merrikh Bentiu’s decision to sign him without a transfer fee is widely seen as a smart move, allowing the club to add experience to its defensive line without financial strain.

For both players, the move to South Sudan represents an opportunity to reset, grow, and redefine their careers. A new environment, different tactical demands, and fresh expectations offer a chance to regain confidence and showcase their abilities away from the intense spotlight of the Rwandan league.

Their arrival also highlights the increasing confidence South Sudanese clubs have in Rwandan football talent. Over the past few seasons, several Rwandan players have made successful transitions to clubs in South Sudan, earning respect from fans and contributing significantly on the pitch.

At El Merrikh SC Bentiu, Serumogo Ali and Tshabalala will not be starting from scratch. They join fellow Rwandan international Ishimwe Saleh, who arrived at the club last year and has since established himself as a reliable member of the squad. The existing presence of a compatriot is expected to ease their adaptation process and help them settle quickly into the team’s culture and playing style.

Beyond El Merrikh Bentiu, other Rwandan players continue to make their mark in South Sudan. Muhire Kevin, currently playing for Jamus SC, is another example of how the country’s league is becoming a viable platform for Rwandan footballers seeking regional exposure and professional growth.

This trend reflects broader developments in East and Central African football, where player movement across borders is increasing as leagues become more structured and competitive. For Rwandan players, South Sudan offers regular playing time, growing fan interest, and the chance to compete in a physically demanding league that values resilience and tactical discipline.

From El Merrikh Bentiu’s perspective, the signings align with the club’s ambition to challenge for top positions and build a squad capable of sustained success. By combining local talent with experienced foreign players from the region, the club aims to strike a balance between cohesion and competitiveness.

As the new season progresses, expectations will be high for Serumogo Ali and Shabani Hussein Tshabalala to make immediate impacts. Their performances will not only influence El Merrikh Bentiu’s results but will also be closely watched back home in Rwanda, where fans continue to follow the journeys of their players abroad.

The signings serve as another reminder that Rwandan footballers are steadily expanding their footprint across the region. With each successful move, the reputation of Rwandan talent grows, opening doors for future generations to explore opportunities beyond domestic borders.
