Rayon Sports Mourns the Death of Dr. Charles Mugemana, Club Doctor of 31 Years

The entire Rayon Sports family and the wider Rwandan sports community have been plunged into deep sorrow following the death of Dr. Charles Mugemana, the long-serving medical doctor who dedicated more than three decades of his life to the club. Dr. Mugemana passed away after a prolonged illness, bringing to an end a remarkable journey defined by loyalty, service, and unconditional love for Rayon Sports.

News of his passing became public on the night of Tuesday, January 13, 2026, after he had battled a serious illness for an extended period. His death has left a profound sense of loss not only within Rayon Sports but also among football fans across the country who came to regard him as part of the club’s identity.

According to reliable sources, Dr. Mugemana died at Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), where he had been receiving specialized medical care for several months. He was admitted to the hospital in September 2025 after his condition deteriorated, and despite continuous treatment, his health failed to improve.

A Lifetime of Service to Rayon Sports
Dr. Charles Mugemana’s name is inseparable from the history of Rayon Sports. He officially joined the club in 1995 as a medical doctor, a role he would carry out with exceptional dedication for 31 years. Over that time, he treated generations of players, coaches, and technical staff, becoming a constant presence through different eras of the club’s successes and challenges.

Within the blue-and-white family, Dr. Mugemana was not seen merely as a staff member but as a pillar of stability and care. His commitment went beyond medical duties, as he was known for offering emotional support, guidance, and encouragement to players both on and off the pitch.

His unwavering presence earned him immense respect, and in March 2025, Rayon Sports leadership publicly honored him during a high-profile match against APR FC. The ceremony recognized his 30 years of service to the club, a rare milestone that highlighted his extraordinary loyalty and professionalism.

A Profession Driven by Passion, Not Obligation
Dr. Mugemana often spoke openly about his relationship with Rayon Sports, emphasizing that his work was motivated by love rather than financial gain. In one of his memorable interviews with the club’s media team, he explained that his bond with Rayon Sports existed long before his formal employment.

“I joined Rayon Sports as an employee in 1995, but even before that, I was already a Rayon Sports supporter. I was not just an employee; I was a fan,” he once said.

Those words captured the essence of his commitment. For Dr. Mugemana, serving Rayon Sports was a calling. He celebrated victories with joy, endured defeats with resilience, and always prioritized the well-being of the players entrusted to his care.

Standing With Him Until the End
In his final months, Dr. Mugemana was surrounded by the same club family he had served faithfully for decades. Rayon Sports leadership, players, and technical staff remained close to him throughout his illness, regularly checking on his condition and offering support.

On October 22, 2025, a delegation of first-team players visited him at CHUK, a gesture that reflected the deep bond he had built with those he treated. Following the visit, club officials appealed to Gikundiro supporters across the country to remember him in their prayers, hoping for strength and recovery.

That moment symbolized the unity between Dr. Mugemana and the club—a relationship rooted in mutual respect, gratitude, and affection.

A Respected Figure Beyond the Club
Although he is best known for his work with Rayon Sports, Dr. Mugemana’s influence extended beyond the football field. He was widely respected within Rwanda’s medical and sports communities for his professionalism, humility, and dedication to athlete welfare.

Players who passed through Rayon Sports often spoke of his calm demeanor, reassuring presence, and deep understanding of sports medicine at a time when such expertise was still developing locally. For many young footballers, he played a key role in helping them recover from injuries and extend their careers.

Dr. Mugemana’s legacy is also carried on through his family. He is the father of popular Rwandan musician Mugemana Yvonne, widely known by her stage name “Queen Cha.” His role as a parent and mentor further reflected the values of discipline, perseverance, and compassion that defined his life.

A Lasting Legacy in Rwandan Football
The passing of Dr. Charles Mugemana marks the end of an era for Rayon Sports. Few individuals in Rwandan football history have served a single club with such consistency and devotion. His 31 years of service stand as a testament to what commitment and passion can achieve.

As tributes continue to pour in from fans, former players, and sports officials, one message remains clear: Dr. Mugemana’s contribution to Rayon Sports and Rwandan football will not be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the countless players he helped heal, the careers he safeguarded, and the spirit of service he embodied.

Rayon Sports has lost more than a doctor. It has lost a family member, a guardian of players’ health, and a symbol of loyalty whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
