Shinning Stars Africa Awards to Make Historic Move From South Africa to Kigali in 2026

The prestigious Shinning Stars Africa Awards, an annual continental recognition platform that has traditionally been hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa, is set to open a new chapter in its history by relocating its main awards ceremony to Kigali, Rwanda. The move marks a significant milestone for both the awards initiative and Rwanda’s growing reputation as a leading destination for high-profile international events.

The 2025/2026 edition of the Shinning Stars Africa Awards will bring together outstanding achievers from across Africa, celebrating excellence in multiple sectors including music, business, sports, film, agriculture, technology, and creative industries. Organizers say the decision to host the ceremony in Kigali reflects the city’s rising status as a hub for innovation, hospitality, and cross-border collaboration.

Starting in January 2026, nominations for the awards will officially open through the Shinning Stars Africa Awards website and affiliated social media platforms. Supporters, fans, and industry stakeholders from different countries will be able to submit nominees across the various competitive categories, ensuring wide participation and continental representation.

The nomination phase will be followed by a voting period scheduled for February 2026. Voting will be conducted through a secure digital system designed to promote transparency, accessibility, and fairness. Organizers have emphasized that the use of technology will allow Africans both on the continent and in the diaspora to actively engage in the selection process.

The climax of the awards season will take place in March 2026, when winners will be officially announced during a grand awards ceremony to be held in Kigali. The event is expected to attract influential figures from across Africa, including artists, entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors, and cultural leaders.

In an interview with IGIHE, Shinning Stars Africa Awards Director Abitije Seraphin Elise expressed confidence in the preparations, noting that while planning for such a large-scale event is continuous, key milestones have already been achieved.

“We have had sufficient time to prepare, even though preparation never truly ends,” he said. “So far, we are satisfied with the progress made, and we are fully ready to welcome participants and guests from different African countries who will attend this year’s awards.”

Abitije highlighted that one of the unique strengths of the Shinning Stars Africa Awards lies in its diversity. The platform brings together individuals from various professional backgrounds, creating an environment that encourages networking, learning, and the exchange of ideas beyond the awards themselves.

According to the organizers, previous editions of the awards held in South Africa attracted attendees from a wide range of African nations, including Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and the Republic of Congo, among others. The Kigali edition is expected to build on that legacy while expanding its reach even further.

The choice of Rwanda as the host country was influenced by growing interest from international stakeholders eager to engage with the country’s dynamic business and service-oriented economy. Abitije noted that positive perceptions of Rwanda played a central role in the decision.

“Wherever we go, people express a strong desire to visit Rwanda,” he explained. “They often say Rwanda is a very beautiful country, especially in terms of service-based business and organization. That is one of the main reasons why the organizers decided that this edition should take place in Kigali.”

Rwanda’s well-developed infrastructure, efficient conference facilities, and reputation for safety and cleanliness have positioned Kigali as a preferred destination for major regional and international events. The hosting of the Shinning Stars Africa Awards is expected to further strengthen the country’s image as a continental meeting point for creativity and excellence.

The 2025/2026 awards will feature a wide range of competitive categories designed to reflect Africa’s diverse talents and industries. Among the confirmed categories are Best Star Businessman/Woman, Best Star Young Achiever, Best Inspirational Man/Woman, Best Star Sports Personality, Best Star Actor, Best Star Actress, Best Star Agripreneur, Best Star Techpreneur, Best Star Male Model, Best Star Female Model, Best Star Male Artist, and Best Star Female Artist.

Organizers say these categories aim to recognize individuals who have demonstrated exceptional impact, leadership, and innovation within their respective fields. Special emphasis will be placed on nominees whose work contributes to community development, economic growth, and positive social change.

Beyond awarding trophies, the Kigali ceremony is expected to serve as a platform for dialogue on Africa’s future, encouraging collaboration between creatives, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. Side events such as panel discussions, networking sessions, and cultural showcases are also being considered as part of the broader program.

As anticipation builds ahead of the 2026 ceremony, the relocation of the Shinning Stars Africa Awards to Kigali is being widely viewed as a strategic and symbolic move. It underscores a broader shift toward recognizing and celebrating African excellence within African cities that embody progress, unity, and global connectivity.

With nominations opening soon and preparations gaining momentum, the Kigali edition of the Shinning Stars Africa Awards is poised to become one of the most significant cultural and professional gatherings on the continent in 2026.
