Al-Hilal SC Reclaim Top Spot in Rwanda Premier League After 2–0 Victory Over APR FC

Al-Hilal SC have reclaimed first place in the Rwanda Premier League standings after securing a convincing 2–0 victory over APR FC in a rescheduled Matchday 15 fixture played on Tuesday evening at Kigali Pelé Stadium in Nyamirambo.

The highly anticipated encounter brought together two of the league’s strongest sides and lived up to expectations, delivering intensity, tactical discipline, and moments of quality that ultimately tilted the balance in favor of Al-Hilal SC. The result sees Al-Hilal move to the top of the table with 38 points from 16 matches, overtaking APR FC, who remain on 37 points after 19 games.

Both teams entered the match aware of its significance in the title race. APR FC had enjoyed a period at the summit of the league, while Al-Hilal SC were looking to capitalize on their games in hand and regain momentum before a crucial continental fixture.

The match began at a high tempo, with both sides pressing aggressively and looking to assert control early. APR FC attempted to dominate possession in midfield, while Al-Hilal SC relied on quick transitions and set-piece efficiency to threaten the opposition defense.

The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Al-Hilal SC were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position outside the penalty area. El Hadji Madicke Kane stepped up and delivered a powerful strike that sailed past goalkeeper Hakizimana Adolphe, who was unable to react in time. The goal sparked celebrations among the Al-Hilal supporters and shifted the momentum firmly in their favor.

APR FC had made notable changes to their lineup ahead of the match, particularly in goal. Hakizimana Adolphe was handed a starting role in league competition, replacing Ishimwe Pierre, who had conceded two goals in a previous match against Bugesera FC. The Army team were also without their captain, Niyomugabo Claude, who missed the game due to illness.

Despite conceding, APR FC responded with renewed determination. The remainder of the first half saw them push forward in search of an equalizer, but Al-Hilal’s defensive organization limited clear scoring opportunities. The first half ended with Al-Hilal SC holding a narrow but deserved lead.

In the second half, APR FC increased the pressure and committed more players forward. Ruboneka Bosco and Djibril Ouattara were central to APR’s attacking efforts, creating several promising chances and testing the Al-Hilal back line. However, their attempts were repeatedly denied by solid defending and the composure of goalkeeper Mustafa Mohamed, who delivered a confident performance between the posts.

As APR FC pressed higher up the pitch, spaces began to open at the back, allowing Al-Hilal SC to exploit counter-attacking opportunities. The tactical patience of Al-Hilal eventually paid off in the 78th minute when they doubled their advantage.

Girumugisha Jean Claude delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, forcing goalkeeper Hakizimana Adolphe into a partial save. The rebound fell kindly to Emmanuel Flomo, who reacted quickest to slot the ball into the net, sealing the victory and effectively ending APR FC’s hopes of a comeback.

The second goal highlighted Al-Hilal SC’s sharpness and efficiency, qualities that have been central to their strong league campaign. It also underscored APR FC’s struggles to convert chances, despite periods of sustained pressure.

Notably, Al-Hilal SC’s head coach opted to rest several key players during the match, managing his squad carefully ahead of a decisive CAF Champions League group-stage clash. Al-Hilal SC are set to face FC St-Eloi Lupopo of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday at Amahoro Stadium, a match that will determine their continental progression.

The decision to rotate players did not weaken Al-Hilal’s performance, instead showcasing the depth and balance within the squad. Their ability to secure a crucial league victory while preparing for international competition reflects a level of maturity and ambition that has impressed observers this season.

With this win, Al-Hilal SC not only reclaimed the top spot but also boosted their confidence as the season enters a decisive phase. Although they still have several postponed matches to play, the club has positioned itself strongly in the title race, holding a slight advantage over APR FC.

For APR FC, the defeat serves as a setback but not a decisive blow. With more matches played than their rivals, they will need to maintain consistency and capitalize on upcoming fixtures to remain competitive in the championship hunt.

The match at Kigali Pelé Stadium attracted significant attention from fans and analysts alike, underlining the growing competitiveness and quality of the Rwanda Premier League. Encounters between Al-Hilal SC and APR FC continue to shape the narrative of the season, with each meeting carrying major implications for the title.

As the league progresses, attention will now turn to how both teams manage their schedules, squad rotations, and pressure from chasing sides. Al-Hilal SC’s victory has reshaped the standings and added fresh intrigue to the race for domestic honors.
